  • What are the costs involved in chartering a luxury superyacht?
Deciding to holiday on a luxury superyacht is something to really look forward to. However, be aware of what's included in the cost. There will be a base charter fee which may or may not include the cost of food and fuel. This is always subject to the terms and conditions of the charter contract, so please read the small print. The type of charter contract depends on where you would like to cruise.
  • What is included in the base charter fee?
The base charter fee covers the hire cost of the yacht, all equipment, the cost of food, and wages for the crew during the entire charter. This fee varies between superyachts depending on the size, make, model, age of the vessel, and the amenities on board. It also varies from season to season and is reduced during the low season.
  • How do event dates affect charter prices?
Prices increase if you're sailing to a special event like the Cannes Film Festival, the America’s Cup, or the Monaco Grand Prix. A more favourable price and a larger selection of vessels can be found on dates before or after these events take place.
  • Why do yachts of the same make and size differ in price?
Yachts of the same make and size can differ in price based on amenities. A superyacht with top-of-the-range water sports facilities or an onboard cinema will have a higher base rate than a vessel with minimal amenities, even though they are the same size. Contact your broker for more information regarding price differences.
  • What aspects affect fuel costs during a yacht charter?
Fuel costs depend on the distance travelled and the speed of the vessel. All fuel used, including fuel for jet skis and tenders, is at the charterer's expense. Additionally, while docked at a marina, generators are used to produce electricity, which also consumes fuel.
  • How do dockage fees vary?
Dockage fees can vary significantly depending on the location and season. Yacht Shop can provide advice on these fees when planning your itinerary.
  • What should I know about insurance for a yacht charter?
Clients often take out Charterers Liability Insurance or Cancellation and Curtailment cover. For further details, please contact Yacht Shop.
  • Is VAT applicable on yacht charters?
Some Caribbean islands and certain European countries charge VAT if you disembark in their territorial waters. Vessels that are commercially registered are usually exempt from VAT, while others must pay VAT for charters within the EU.
  • What additional costs should I be aware of?
Consider shipping costs for any forgotten items that need to be flown to you while on board. Keeping an escrow account with your broker can help manage these costs and avoid carrying cash on board.
  • How do charter contracts vary?
Charter contracts vary considerably depending on where you would like to cruise. Different terms within the industry determine the payment structure. For example, a MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association) contract operates under WMT (Western Mediterranean Terms) and is commonly used for larger yachts in the Mediterranean.
  • What is a "plus all expenses" contract?
Under a "plus all expenses" contract, the charterer pays for food, beverages, fuel, and dockage fees in addition to the base charter fee. This kind of contract can lead to an additional 25-50% of the base charter fee, depending on the food intake. These expenses can be tracked using an APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance).
  • What is a "mostly all-inclusive" contract?
Smaller yachts on a Caribbean yacht charter often use a "mostly all-inclusive" contract known as Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) or Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT). SCT terms include three meals per day and four hours of cruising each day, all covered within the base charter fee.
  • Are there other contract terms?
Yes, there are terms like Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms (SEMT) and Greek Terms (GI) in addition to MYBA and SCT terms. For more details, refer to the information on Understanding Charter Contracts, or contact one of our brokers.
  • What are the key features of Yacht Shop’s contracts?
Yacht Shop’s contracts adhere to the highest industry standards, detailing the rights and obligations of both the owner and the charterer. They include the payment structure, insurance, and cancellation policy in plain English.
  • What are MYBA Terms?
The MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association) contract operates under Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT), often described as a “plus all expenses” contract. It requires the charterer to pay for food, fuel, beverages, dockage/berthing fees, and communication fees in addition to the base charter fee.
  • What are Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI)?
CTI is a mostly all-inclusive contract expected on smaller yachts on a Caribbean yacht charter. It includes four hours of daily cruising and three meals a day. However, guests must pay for additional fuel used if they exceed the daily cruising limit, use electricity while moored, or use jet skis.
  • What should I consider when reviewing the charter contract?
Read the charter contract carefully to understand how it affects you. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your broker. Brokers are experts in the yachting industry and can explain everything contained in the contract.
